Player Development

Long Term Player Development

Beginning in the 2015/16 hockey season, SAMHA will be adhering to Hockey Alberta & Hockey Canada's Long Term Player Development. This was derived from the Canadian Sport For Life - Long Term Athlete Development model. It is strongly suggested that every Coach, Player, Trainer & Parent familiarize yourselves with the short amount of slides on the Hockey Alberta link below.

What is Long Term Player Development?

Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) or Long Term Player Development (LTPD) is a “made-in-Canada” framework to maximize a player’s potential and long term involvement in sport over the course of his/her life. It focuses on the general framework of athlete development with special reference to growth, maturation and development, trainability, and sport system alignment and integration. Please click on the Hockey Alberta logo to read more in depth about the important growth of an athlete.

There are 4 key characteristics of the LTPD, developed in 9 different Stages:

- Technical Development - Teaching physical literacy and sport specific skills at the correct time.

- Tactical Development - There are individual & team tactics, are you developing both? Do you know how to develop both?

- Physiological Development - Hereditary, chronological age & daily environment all play a factor. How does this affect development?

- Psychological Development - Mental, cognitive & emotional maturity. Do you fully understand the age level you are teaching?

Please, click on the above logo to learn more about the 9 stages, and how YOU can help develop a better athlete and overall hockey player.
